According to a new study presented at the 2023 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, a simple hysterectomy, a surgical procedure where the uterus and cervix are removed, is a safe treatment option that can improve the quality of life for women with early-stage, low-risk cervical cancer.

The study showed that a simple hysterectomy resulted in similar outcomes when compared to the standard radical hysterectomy, i.e., a cancer-free state. As radical hysterectomy is a more complex surgery, it is associated with more acute and long-term side effects, as well as potential impacts on the quality of life and sexual health of patients.

The study looked at the three-year pelvic recurrence rate and other health outcomes in 700 individuals from 12 countries who had both basic and radical hysterectomies. The data revealed that extra-pelvic recurrence-free survival, relapse-free survival, and overall survival were equivalent between the two groups.

In the uncomplicated hysterectomy group, there were fewer intraoperative urological surgical difficulties as well as fewer acute and long-term bladder issues. Several elements of quality of life, including body image, pain, and sexual health, were consistently better in them.
